“We all need people who raise our standards, remind us of our essential purpose, and challenge us to become the best version of ourselves.” Tennis can be a great vehicle for becoming this best version and teaching essential life skills such as developing quality relationships. Everyone needs to feel competent at something that leads them to feel a sense of pride in themselves. They also need to develop quality social experiences and friendships by belonging and connecting to a group.
Unfortunately, these quality social experiences have diminished over the last 40 years. In the past you really got to know your neighbors and spent quality time together. The husband was generally the provider and kids developed relationships in the neighborhood by getting involved with each other in outdoor activities. Flash forward to today and the norm is both spouses work to make ends meet. Everyone seems too limited with their time and are often distracted. Sadly, neighbors often don’t really know each other. Children are involved in numerous organized activities outside the immediate community allowing them very little time to engage with each other in their neighborhood.
There is no better sport than tennis and no better environment than the tennis program at Angel Fire Resort in northern New Mexico to meet these social needs. We provide a fun filled, organized experience set in a positive atmosphere! At Angel Fire acceptance is not based on tennis skill but the integrity of each individual. The camaraderie of the group fosters a culture of encouragement of doing your best on the court. We try to follow the golden rule: treat others as they would want them to treat you. The end result is emotionally satisfying relationships. What matters most at the end of the day are the people in our lives.
Friendships need time and attention; “nurture them like a prized garden.” The payoff is so worth it. When you adopt the concept that life is about we and not about me magic happens! Quality social experiences are important for society and foster caring and empathy for others. The bottom line is if we had more Angel Fires in the world, the world would be a better place!
