The dictionary defines inspire as to fill with an animating, quickening, or exalting influence. Everyone needs to be inspired periodically. I have been inspired by athletes, politicians, business leaders, and philanthropists. My greatest inspiration, however, comes from those who face incredibly challenging circumstances such as cancer with an extremely optimistic attitude. The two most incredible human beings that have inspired me are Jim Valvano and Craig Sager. Jim Valvano was the successful college basketball coach who won the NCAA title in 1983 and passed away at the age of 47 from bone cancer. Craig was a sportscaster for NBA games known for his colorful suits. He passed away last year at age 65 from leukemia. Both men had incredibly positive attitudes with each facing a dire prognosis. They both lived extraordinary and enriched lives after their diagnosis inspiring others in their journey.
Jim Valvano’s inspiring quote for me was “Cancer can take away my physical abilities. It cannot touch my mind, it cannot touch my heart, and it cannot touch my soul.” My favorite Craig Sager quote was “Time is something that cannot be bought, it cannot be wagered with God, and it is not in endless supply.” Time is simply how you live your life. I have learned from these great individuals that I have control over my mind, heart, and soul. No one knows how much time they have so I try to live a full life by staying optimistic while inspiring and helping others in my own journey!
Who inspires YOU!
